Microlight Expertise from Champions
Exodus is the premier destination for microlight training, whether you are a new pilot seeking your license or a proficient flyer aiming for advanced skills.
Our team is led by Rob Grimwood – winner of the World Air Games and multiple World, European, and UK champion – alongside highly experienced instructors Richard Higton and Giles Fowler. You will benefit directly from their vast experience and skill.
Microlight Flying for Newcomers
Exodus follows the BMAA/CAA-approved syllabus to train pilots for the NPPL Microlight Licence.
Licence Requirements
| Licence Type | Total Hours (Min.) | Solo Hours (Min.) | Cross-Country (40NM) | Benefit |
| NPPL Microlight | 25 hours | 10 hours | Yes (Two required) | Full UK flying privileges. |
| Restricted Licence | 15 hours | 7 hours | No | Local area flying only (good for limited budget/time). |
To qualify for either licence, you must pass 5 multiple-choice exams covering: Air Law, Navigation, Meteorology, Principles of Flight, and Human Factors. Ground school sessions cover the required knowledge.
Age and Medical Requirements
Training can begin at 14 years old, with solo flights permitted from age 16. If you are fit to drive a car, you are fit to fly. All that is required is an online declaration of fitness.
Training Structure and Syllabus
Training is conducted one-to-one in ‘two-hour’ slots, combining flying time with comprehensive pre- and post-flight briefings. Programmes are individually tailored to the student’s pace but students begin flying from the very first lesson, gradually flying for more of the flight as skills level increases.
At all times, we prioritise producing the safest and most competent pilots. Lessons are available on school aircraft or the student’s own plane. We offer conversion courses for both fixed-wing and flexwing aircraft.
- Flexwing Training: Student flies from the front seat; instructor flies from the adapted back seat. We supply helmet, headset, flying suit, and gloves. You are advised to wear suitable clothes for being outside for the time of year and trousers and flat shoes are a necessity.
- 3-Axis (Fixed-Wing) Instruction: In aircraft like the Nynja, the side-by-side seating allows dual control. Headsets and efficient heaters are provided, making year-round flying comfortable.
- Ground Training: Human Factors, Aerotechnical, Airlaw, Aviation Meteorology & Navigation.
- Radio Licence: Although non-mandatory, we encourage pilots to complete the radiotelephony course to become familiar with common calls and hold an operator’s licence.
The Syllabus covers nine phases: Familiarisation, Basic Manoeuvres, Slow Speed Handling (Stalls/Spin Avoidance), Circuit Flying, Advanced Handling, Emergency Procedures, Solo Flight, VFR Navigation, and General Skills Test preparation.
